What are autoflower?

Autoflowering cannabis plants are a type of cannabis strain that does not require a change in the light cycle to start flowering. Unlike traditional photoperiod strains, which require a change in the light cycle from 18 hours of light to 12 hours of darkness to induce flowering, autoflowering strains will start to flower on their own after a certain amount of time, typically between 2-4 weeks from germination.

Autoflowering strains are the result of crossbreeding between cannabis ruderalis, a wild cannabis subspecies native to regions with short summers and limited daylight, and photoperiod strains, which are cultivated for their potency, yield, and flavor. As a result, autoflowering strains tend to have a shorter growing cycle, typically around 8-12 weeks from seed to harvest, and are generally smaller in size, with a maximum height of around 1-1.5 meters.

One of the benefits of growing autoflowering strains is that they are well-suited for small spaces and do not require as much attention or maintenance as photoperiod strains. Additionally, autoflowering strains can be grown year-round, as they are not reliant on changes in the light cycle. However, they generally have lower yields and potency compared to photoperiod strains, although there are now many high-quality autoflowering strains available on the market.
