These figures are ranges, not promises. Flowering time, harvest date and yield vary depending on growing conditions: the grower, the method and the season's weather. "Mold resistant" means mold tolerant: less prone to mold and slower to be affected. No strain is 100% mold resistant. How we set these numbers →

About Durban Poison

Genetics & strain profile

Durban Poison is a pure sativa, a landrace from the port city of Durban in South Africa that has been in seed catalogues since the 1970s and is the ancestor of half the Cookies family. It has 18% THC, it is easy to grow with resilient plants, it carries our harvest-from-September badge, and there is one grow diary on GrowDiaries. Ten reviews average 4.4 out of 5: “WOW O WOW — if you love sativa, this is it”; “grew like a tree, stems completely red, buds turning purple”; “very tall plants, pest resistant, the buzz is cerebral and creative”. The honest notes, and there are several, are about variation: a grower who knows the strain well found “crazy” differences between plants — taste, look and a full month between finish dates, October 1 to 31 — and gave three stars for it; another agrees there are phenotype differences but says every seed grew well and he kept the best as a mother; one had duck-foot leaf mutations; and two had germination trouble, 3 of 5 and 4 of 5. A landrace is not a stabilized hybrid, and it shows. Our seeds are guaranteed.

How Durban Poison grows

It flowers in just 8 to 9 weeks — fast for a pure sativa, which is why it has stayed in catalogues for fifty years — and typically gives 300 to 400 g/m² indoors on tall, lanky plants with long internodes and thin, spear-shaped colas; top it early, net it and leave plenty of headroom, because it stretches hard after the flip. It feeds lightly, as landraces do, and the open buds handle humidity well. Outdoors it grows like a tree — reviewers report 160 to 180 cm from a late start and much more from an early one — and the plants are resilient and pest resistant. It is typically ready in mid-October with up to 450 g per plant, but as the reviews warn, finish dates vary by phenotype, from early October to the end of the month: if you grow several, expect to harvest them one at a time, and clone the earliest, best plant for next year. Cold nights bring out red stems and purple buds.

Taste, aroma and effect

Earthy, spicy and sweet, with hints of pine and anise — the liquorice note is the signature, though reviewers note that the taste varies between phenotypes. The effect is the reason it has survived fifty years: a strong, energetic head high, clear, “buzzy and upbeat, happy”, creative and motivated, with no body weight at all — the classic daytime sativa, and the one to grow if you want to be functional. At 18% THC it is moderate, though the pure-sativa clarity can be racy for anyone prone to anxiety. For other daytime sativas, see Hawaiian Sativa, Strawberry Cough and Amnesia Autoflower; for its most famous descendant, Girl Scout Cookies.

I planted 1 Durban Poison seed and it grew like a tree.

The stems are completely red. Some buds and sugar leaves are turning purple.

I'll see what that seed is capable of.

I agree there is phenotype differences, If you grow 4 in a tent, you'll see that for sure. Truthfully, I'd say even more variation in the cindy slow grow. Yet, every seed I planted grew well, some far better than others and those were the lines i kept with cloning. I have one Mom I kept as one of my 4 plants. Buzzy and upbeat, happy Quite strong.

4 of 5 seeds germinated, so better than my average from this company. They all grew well and seem fairly resistant to pests. The reason they only get a 3 star from me is the variation from one plant to another is crazy. Completely different taste, look, finish times( full MONTH difference, oct 1-oct31). I know durban poison very well and have sampled many different peoples products. Not one of my durban poison plants is close to any durban poison that I have had in the past and like I said I have had legal, grey market and homegrown durban that are all similar to each other but nothing like this. I have been growing and making my own seeds for almost 30 years and am well aware of the variations between phenotypes but this is like a first gen cross of very different strains not a 500 year old strain??? So disappointing after 6 months of growing and 4 months of drying and curing to end up with a vastly different product than what you ordered!

It all germinates very well. Where easy to grow and flavor was a "delice" ! Very tall plant and pest resistant.

Some has mutate on "duck foot" and we made 2 harvest with thoses. The buzz is cerebral and creative.

Got 2 of these as freebies last summer and they turned out amazing. Huge plants that were around 7 feet tall and i planted late. One of the best smelling and tasting strains out there. They mature fast and was able to harvest in late september. Pretty good for a str8 sativa in ontarios climate. Big yeilds too. But it will stink your yard up!
