This page explains Nevada's unusual home-grow rule, which since the 2016 adult-use vote has allowed cultivation only for people living more than 25 miles from a licensed retailer. It also covers the very different growing conditions of the Mojave Desert in the south and the high desert of the north.

Is it legal to grow cannabis in Nevada?

As of October 2026, adult-use cannabis is legal in Nevada under a measure approved by voters in 2016. Adults may grow at home only if they live more than 25 miles from a licensed cannabis retailer, with some exceptions. Where home growing is allowed, the limit is 6 plants per adult and 12 per household, plants must not be visible from a public place, and growers need the property owner's permission. Buying cannabis seeds online in Nevada: the federal rules

Under the federal law in force today (the 2018 Farm Bill), cannabis seeds with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC have been treated as hemp, as the DEA said in informal letters in 2022. A new federal hemp definition takes effect on December 11, 2026, unless Congress delays it again, and it excludes viable seeds from plants above 0.3% total THC. Regulators have not yet said how they will apply it to seeds. Once a seed germinates, state law decides whether you may grow it. Read the federal section of our US guide.

Growing season and climate in Nevada

For growers who qualify under the distance rule, southern Nevada's Mojave Desert offers a long season but extreme summer heat, intense sun and very low humidity, so shade cloth and steady watering are essential. Northern Nevada and the Great Basin sit much higher, with cold nights, a short frost-free period and frost that can arrive in September. Much of the rural land that lies far from retailers is in this high desert. Wind, alkaline soils and scarce water are challenges across the state.

Durban Poison suits the long, hot southern season, Afghanistan Kush finishes before the high desert's early cold, and the compact Northern Lights Auto works for short northern summers or indoors.

Harvest dates and THC figures are ranges from our strain pages, not promises: results depend on the grower, the method and the season’s weather.
