Buying cannabis seeds online in California: the federal rules

Under the federal law in force today (the 2018 Farm Bill), cannabis seeds with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC have been treated as hemp, as the DEA said in informal letters in 2022. A new federal hemp definition takes effect on December 11, 2026, unless Congress delays it again, and it excludes viable seeds from plants above 0.3% total THC. Regulators have not yet said how they will apply it to seeds. Once a seed germinates, state law decides whether you may grow it. Read the federal section of our US guide.

Growing season and climate in California

California has several very different growing zones. The Central Valley and inland Southern California have long, hot, dry summers that suit late-finishing plants, while areas near the ocean get summer fog and damp autumn air that can lead to bud rot. The far north has a long season too, but fall rains can arrive during October. Mountain areas in the Sierra Nevada have a much shorter season, with frost possible in September.

These October finishers make full use of California's long inland season, and Quebec Cookies is the choice for damp coastal autumns because it is tolerant of common pests and mold.

  • Durban Poison – pure sativa, about 18% THC, ready mid-October outdoors
  • NYC Diesel – bred by QCS, sativa-dominant, up to 24% THC, ready late October outdoors
  • Quebec Cookies – bred by QCS, 70% sativa, 19–25% THC, ready late October outdoors, tolerant of common pests and mold
  • Quebec Super Skunk – bred by QCS, mostly indica, up to 20% THC, ready in October outdoors

Harvest dates and THC figures are ranges from our strain pages, not promises: results depend on the grower, the method and the season’s weather.
