Buying cannabis seeds online in Idaho: the federal rules

Under the federal law in force today (the 2018 Farm Bill), cannabis seeds with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC have been treated as hemp, as the DEA said in informal letters in 2022. A new federal hemp definition takes effect on December 11, 2026, unless Congress delays it again, and it excludes viable seeds from plants above 0.3% total THC. Regulators have not yet said how they will apply it to seeds. Once a seed germinates, state law decides whether you may grow it. Read the federal section of our US guide.

Growing season and climate in Idaho

If the law changes, Idaho's season would depend heavily on elevation. The Snake River Plain in the south has hot, dry summers with cool nights, while mountain valleys can see frost in early September or even late August. The northern Panhandle is cooler and wetter, with fall rain arriving earlier. Low humidity in the south would mean fewer mold problems but more watering.

If growing becomes legal, early finishers such as Quebec Early Bud and SFV OG Fast, along with autoflowering Northern Lights Auto, would suit Idaho's short high-elevation seasons.

• Northern Lights Autoflower – bred by QCS, autoflower, 90% indica, compact, 50–60 days
• Quebec Early Bud – bred by QCS, balanced hybrid, about 20% THC, ready mid-September outdoors
• SFV OG Fast Version – mostly indica, about 24% THC, ready mid-September outdoors

Harvest dates and THC figures are ranges from our strain pages, not promises: results depend on the grower, the method and the season’s weather.
