Godfather OG Strain Review - THC, Flowering Time and Yield

Posted On 01/17/2024 By QCS

Godfather OG is a 60% indica-dominant hybrid with up to 28% THC that flowers in 7 to 12 weeks indoors, finishes outdoors in early October, and yields 350 to 500 g per plant. It is one of the heaviest evening strains we sell, and despite the nickname "the Don of all OGs" it is forgiving enough for a second-time grower. This review covers its genetics, flavour, effects and medical uses, and then everything we and our customers have learned about growing it — including what happens when you leave it outdoors in a Quebec October.

There are two different Godfather OGs — know which one you are buying

This trips people up constantly, so it is worth being direct about it.

The original Californian Godfather OG is a cross of XXX OG and Alpha OG. It is the strain that won indica titles at US cannabis cups and the one lab-tested in the low thirties for THC, which is where the "Don of all OGs" reputation and the widely repeated 34% figure come from.

The Godfather OG sold by Quebec Cannabis Seeds is our own cross: OG Kush × Granddaddy Purple × Cherry Pie. It is 60% indica, tests up to 28% THC, and was bred for the shorter, cooler season growers actually face in Canada rather than for a Southern California summer. The Granddaddy Purple in the line is what brings the purple pistils and the grape note; the Cherry Pie adds sweetness behind the pine.

Both are genuinely Godfather OG, and both hit hard. If you are comparing seed banks, check the stated lineage rather than the name, because the two plants grow differently.

Appearance, aroma and flavour

The buds come in compact and dense, deep green, with purple pistils twisting through them and a heavy coat of trichomes that gives the whole flower a frosted look. One customer growing indoors described week-eight buds as "big as a beer can, covered in frost."

The smell arrives before anything else: earthy and piney up front, with a pungent skunk underneath and a bright citrus edge. That comes from a terpene profile led by myrcene and caryophyllene, with β-pinene and D-limonene behind them.

On the inhale it is earthy pine and spice; on the exhale a sweet grape tone from the Granddaddy Purple side that lingers longer than most OG crosses. It is a full-bodied, slightly sweet smoke rather than a sharp one.

Godfather OG effects: what to expect

The onset is fast and mostly physical. Expect a wave of euphoria in the first few minutes, then a heavy, warm body relaxation that settles into the shoulders and legs. At higher doses it reliably produces couch-lock.

Commonly reported effects:

  • Euphoria and elevated mood
  • Deep physical relaxation and tension relief
  • Sedation, building toward sleep
  • Some creative or introspective headspace at low doses
  • Couch-lock at higher doses

This is an evening strain. It is not a daytime, get-things-done cultivar, and at up to 28% THC it is not where a first-time smoker should start. One of our customers summed up the lighter end of it well: grown indoors, he found it "surprisingly good for an after-dinner toke" rather than an instant knockout.

Medical uses

  • Chronic pain. The strong body effect is the main draw for pain from inflammation or injury.
  • Insomnia. The sedation makes it one of the more dependable strains for getting to sleep and staying asleep.
  • Stress and anxiety. The calm comes on quickly, though very high doses can tip into anxiety for sensitive users.
  • Muscle spasms. Frequently reported as easing cramping and spasm.
  • Appetite loss. Appetite stimulation is reliable and arrives early.

Side effects

Dry mouth and dry eyes are near-universal and easily managed with water and drops. Dizziness and mild paranoia show up mainly in people who are not used to high-THC indicas, or who take a second hit before the first has landed. With a strain this potent, waiting ten minutes between hits solves most of it.

Growing Godfather OG indoors

Godfather OG is one of the easier heavy indicas to grow. The plants stay medium height, which suits a tent, and the structure is sturdy enough to hold dense flowers without much support.

  • Flowering time: 7 to 12 weeks. Most indoor growers finish around week 9.
  • Light: 18 hours in veg, 12 hours once you flip.
  • Temperature: 21 to 27 °C (70 to 80 °F) during the day, about 5 °C cooler at night.
  • Humidity: drop to roughly 40% through flower. Those dense buds will hold moisture and mould if you let humidity run high.
  • Feeding: this plant is a heavy feeder. One grower reported leaves yellowing early and recommends carrying veg nutrients into the second week of flower rather than switching over the moment you flip.
  • Training: prune for airflow and light penetration. It responds well to topping, but it does not need aggressive training to produce.
  • Harvest: milky trichomes for peak THC and a slightly more alert high; let some amber for maximum sedation.

A realistic indoor result from a customer running it with minimal fuss was about 120 g from one plant. Growers who veg for a full month and feed properly report considerably more.

Growing Godfather OG outdoors in Quebec and eastern Canada

This is where the honest advice matters, and where most strain reviews are useless because they were written for a Mediterranean climate.

Godfather OG finishes outdoors in early October, which puts it right at the edge of the season in zones 4 and 5. That is doable, but it leaves no margin, and the plant's own preference is for warm, dry autumn nights that Quebec does not reliably supply.

Two first-hand reports from our customers tell the story:

  • A grower in September 2024 found that outdoor nights below 15 °C caused premature yellowing and, in his view, risked hermaphroditism. He finished the plant indoors. His advice, which we would repeat: this cultivar prefers a Mediterranean climate, so watch your night temperatures.
  • A grower in August 2026 germinated outdoors, brought the seedling in at night, and planted out only once frost risk had passed. By week 19 the plant was close to 14 feet tall with similar girth, and flowering began on 7 August.

What that adds up to, practically:

  • Start indoors and transplant out after the last frost, not before.
  • Give it the warmest, most sheltered spot you have, preferably against a south-facing wall.
  • Have a plan to finish indoors or under cover if September nights go cold.
  • Expect a large plant if you plant early in open ground; give it room.
  • If your season is genuinely short, an autoflower or a fast-version strain is the safer outdoor choice, and Godfather OG becomes your indoor grow.

How Godfather OG compares to other OG strains

StrainTHCLeanCharacter
Godfather OGUp to 28%60% indicaHeavy sedation, earthy pine and grape, evening only
OG KushAround 20 to 24%Balanced hybridThe reference point: lemon, fuel, more alert
Granddaddy PurpleAround 20%IndicaGrape and berry, relaxing but less flattening
Typical OG crosses20 to 25%VariesMore balanced, usable earlier in the day

The short version: most OG strains sit in the low twenties and leave you functional. Godfather OG does not. Choose it when sedation is the point.

How to smoke it

  • Grind finely for an even burn and the full terpene profile.
  • A vaporizer gives you the most control over dose and brings out the pine and grape; a pipe or joint is simpler but hits harder.
  • Start with one small hit and wait ten minutes. At up to 28% THC, the second hit is the one people regret.
  • Have water and snacks ready. Dry mouth and appetite both arrive early.
  • Pick a setting you can stay in. This is a music-and-a-movie strain, not a going-out strain.

Frequently asked questions

How long does Godfather OG take to flower?

Godfather OG flowers in 7 to 12 weeks indoors, with most growers finishing around week 9. Outdoors it is ready in early October.

How much does Godfather OG yield?

Expect 350 to 500 g per plant in good conditions. A low-effort indoor grow in a small space will produce closer to 120 g.

How strong is Godfather OG?

Up to 28% THC with under 1% CBD, which places it among the stronger indica-dominant hybrids available. The original Californian XXX OG × Alpha OG version has been reported as high as 34%.

Is Godfather OG indica or sativa?

It is 60% indica and 40% sativa. The effect is firmly on the indica side: heavy body relaxation and sedation rather than a head high.

What are the parents of Godfather OG?

The Quebec Cannabis Seeds version crosses OG Kush, Granddaddy Purple and Cherry Pie. The original Californian Godfather OG is XXX OG crossed with Alpha OG.

Is Godfather OG good for beginners?

It is easy to grow but strong to smoke. A first-time grower will manage the plant; a first-time smoker should start with a much smaller dose than they think they need.

Can Godfather OG be grown outdoors in Quebec?

Yes, but with care. It finishes in early October and dislikes night temperatures below 15 °C, which can cause premature yellowing. Start indoors, transplant after the last frost, use the warmest spot you have, and be ready to finish under cover.

Where can I buy Godfather OG seeds in Canada?

Directly from Quebec Cannabis Seeds, shipped from Quebec with an 80% germination guarantee, a delivery guarantee and discreet unbranded packaging. Canada 3 to 7 days standard, 2 to 3 days Express; free shipping over $200.

The verdict

Godfather OG earns its name. Up to 28% THC, a flavour that balances earthy pine against sweet grape, and a body effect that does exactly what a heavy indica is supposed to do. It is straightforward to grow indoors, generous at 350 to 500 g per plant, and manageable outdoors in Quebec if you respect the calendar and the night temperatures. Keep it for the evening, start low, and it will not disappoint.
