These figures are ranges, not promises. Flowering time, harvest date and yield vary depending on growing conditions: the grower, the method and the season's weather. "Mold resistant" means mold tolerant: less prone to mold and slower to be affected. No strain is 100% mold resistant. How we set these numbers →

About Purple Kush

Genetics & strain profile

Purple Kush is the Oakland, California indica that made purple cannabis famous: a cross of Hindu Kush and Purple Afghani, known around the world for its purple leaves, its smoky grape taste and its very high THC, up to 23%. Our feminized version is one of our QCS Originals and a best seller, with 25 reviews averaging 4.8 out of 5 and five public grow diaries, and it sits in our beginner-friendly selection. One grower pulled 17.5 ounces dried from a single plant and says it gets tastier with every month of cure; another, on his first run, found it grew easily on an organic dry-amendment feed and cured to a “sweet, candy-like” smell. An honest four-star review is worth reading too: a grower who ranks it in his top five indicas saw no purple at all in his plants and almost no smell — colour depends on the phenotype and on cool nights late in flower, and it is a quiet plant in the grow.

How Purple Kush grows

Purple Kush is the strain to pick when time is short. It has a short growing cycle, flowering in 55 to 65 days, and it is low-maintenance — a durable, versatile, compact plant that forgives missed feedings and does not need much training; one reviewer’s plants “grew very fast” with lush, sticky flowers. It suits indoor and outdoor growers alike: indoors it fills a small tent without stretching much, and outdoors its short flower brings the harvest into September across most of Canada, which is why it carries our September badge. The buds are dense and frosty, so keep the air moving in the last two weeks. For the purple to show, let night temperatures drop in the final weeks; a green phenotype is just as potent. Germination reports are good, and when a pack has failed we have replaced it — one reviewer received replacements twice at no cost.

Taste, aroma and effect

An earthy, pungent aroma; the smoke is somewhat fruity, like grapes, with a smoky, earthy, skunky aftertaste and, in some phenotypes, a candy sweetness after a long cure. We find, as many others do, that it has a heavy high with a strong body stone: euphoric, relaxing and long-lasting — a night-time indica for sleep and for switching off. At up to 23% THC it is strong. For the autoflowering version, see Auto Purple Kush; for other purple indicas, Granddaddy Purple and Purple Widow; for the Afghan side of the family, Mazar.

My first time running this purple kush it grew easy. I used gaia green, all purpose & power bloom with worm Castings. Once cured for 2-3 weeks this pheno has sweet candy like smell and taste. It's nice really nice tasting smoke with a great buzz.

This is in my Top 5 Indicas, Mazar is still my favourite.
A healthy plant. Easy to grow. The entire plant had rich green colours. I enjoyed growing this plant and I'm happy with the end result. I did not give this 5 stars for 2 reasons: First, I saw no sign of the exotic purple colours I read so much about. Secondly, there was absolutely zero smell to this plant, even at harvest. While this might be important to a stealth grower, I was disappointed. I will try another seed next year and hope for different characteristics.

Just harvested top half of this 8ft monster. Very clean only couple spots raised my eyebrow for bud rot. 93% of my trim is in drying bin. P.K. grows large fits in Lb/plant easily.
