Runtz Strain Review: THC, Effects, Flowering Time & Yield

Runtz is the candy strain of the 2020s: a Gelato × Zkittlez hybrid with up to 27% THC, a sweet fruit-and-cream flavour and frosty buds that often turn purple late in flower. What is Runtz?

Runtz comes out of the Los Angeles Cookies family in the late 2010s, a cross of Gelato and Zkittlez that took the dessert flavour of the first and the candy fruit of the second. It became the most hyped strain in North America around 2019–2020 — Leafly named it Strain of the Year in 2020 — and spawned a whole family of “Runtz” crosses: White Runtz, Pink Runtz, Black Runtz and more.

Our Runtz feminized seeds are bred by Quebec Cannabis Seeds from Gelato and Zkittlez parents, selected for potency, colour and the candy flavour. Strain names are not protected, so Runtz from another seed bank can be a different cross; everything on this page describes ours. Is Runtz indica or sativa?

Runtz is a true 50/50 hybrid. In the garden it starts out short and bushy like an indica — one grower was surprised at how small her plants were at 28 days from seed — and then stretches in the first weeks of flowering like a sativa. The high is balanced the same way: Gelato brings the euphoric, uplifting start, Zkittlez brings the calm, relaxed finish. If you want the Runtz flavour with a heavier body, Black Runtz leans indica.

Smell and flavour: candy, tropical fruit, berries and cream

This is why people grow Runtz. The aroma is sweet candy and tropical fruit with berry and a creamy, dessert-like finish, with very little of the skunk or fuel found in older strains. On the exhale it is smooth and sugary, the Gelato cream sitting under the Zkittlez fruit. One Quebec grower who had already harvested Gelato and Zkittlez separately wrote that Runtz was “more interesting than its parents”.

Appearance: frosty, dense buds with purple and lime tones

Runtz buds are dense and heavily frosted — one customer called them “white and powdery” with resin — and the colours are the show: lime green, deep purple and orange pistils, with the purple coming out late in flower and with cooler nights. A grower who ran two plants from seed wrote that “the colours are amazing and the fantastic smell” at day 61 of flower.

Runtz effects

The effect is euphoric and happy at first, then calm and relaxed — a balanced high that works in the afternoon or evening. At up to 27% THC it is strong, and the sweet flavour makes it easy to overdo, so pace yourself. Customers describe the plant as “special” and the smoke as exceeding expectations. Effects vary with the person, the dose and how the plant was grown.

How strong is Runtz? THC content

Runtz delivers up to 27% THC with low CBD, depending on the growing conditions, the phenotype and the harvest window. That puts it among the strongest strains we sell, alongside Bruce Banner. For a strain with the same dessert flavour family and a little less punch, see Gelato.

Growing Runtz: flowering time and yield

Runtz is rated moderate. Plants stay compact in veg — give them 4 to 6 weeks and do not panic if they look small — then stretch when flipped, so top once and leave headroom. Indoors it flowers in 8 to 9 weeks and yields up to 500 g/m² under good light; one grower had hers ready at day 61. It responds well to a steady feed and clones exceptionally well — a repeat grower called it the “best plant ever to make clones”. Outdoors it is typically ready in late September to early October, with up to 500 g per plant in optimal conditions, and cool September nights help bring out the purple. Those figures are ranges, not promises. The dense buds need airflow in a wet fall.

Indoor is measured per m², outdoor per plant — the two figures aren’t directly comparable. Real grower results vary widely.

What growers report

We would rather give you the whole picture, so here is what customers wrote on the Runtz product page (9 reviews, rated 5 out of 5 at the time of writing). Most of them come from one Ontario grower who documented a full run from seed, which makes a useful timeline.

• Week 3 from seed: “very healthy, beautiful plant… very small, I’m wondering if they really reach 100 centimetres.” Runtz starts slow and compact.
• Day 40–45: flipped after about 40 days of veg, “very short, but now the stretch starts.”
• Two weeks into flower: “stunningly beautiful”, and “best plant ever to make clones” — she cut four clones from two plants and all took.
• Day 61 of flower: “ready tomorrow… the colours are amazing and the fantastic smell, I’ve never been so pleased.” That lands inside our 8 to 9 week range.
• Germination and quality: another grower had all 10 seeds germinate; a Quebec grower called the buds white and powdery with resin and rated Runtz above its parents Gelato and Zkittlez.

The takeaway: be patient in veg, top once, give it room to stretch, and Runtz pays you back with some of the prettiest, frostiest buds in the catalogue.
