AK-47 is the 1990s classic that growers keep coming back to: a four-way Colombian × Mexican × Thai × Afghan hybrid that is 65% sativa, tests at 19 to 22% THC, flowers in 8 to 9 weeks and is one of the easiest big-yielding strains to grow. This AK-47 strain review covers its genetics, THC, effects, flowering time and yield, plus what more than twenty Canadian growers wrote about it on our product page — some of them after growing it for twenty years.

What is AK-47?
AK-47 was released by Serious Seeds in Amsterdam in 1992, built from Colombian, Mexican and Thai sativas crossed with an Afghan indica. The name refers to the “one-hit” potency of the time, not to anything violent — the breeder has said he regrets it. It collected more than a dozen Cannabis Cup awards through the 1990s and 2000s and became a staple of every serious seed catalogue.
Our AK-47 feminized seeds are our own cut of that lineage, selected for resin, vigour and the classic earthy-citrus flavour. Strain names are not protected, so AK-47 from another bank is a different plant; everything on this page describes ours — and judging by a grower who ran it twenty years ago and again in 2024, it is the same AK he remembered. Is AK-47 indica or sativa?
AK-47 is 65% sativa, and that shows most in the garden: it is a tall, vigorous plant — Ontario growers on our product page report plants of 6 to 7 feet outdoors, 4 to 5 feet around — with the Afghan side giving sturdy branches and dense, resinous buds. The effect is sativa-first: uplifting and euphoric, then a relaxing body feeling from the indica side. For a pure indica with the same ease of growing, see Northern Lights.
Smell and flavour: earth, pine and citrus with spice and wood
The aroma is earthy and piney with citrus, plus spice, wood and a light floral sweetness. It is pungent in the grow room and the jar — one Ontario grower wrote that his jars “absolutely reek of grapefruit with a hint of sharp cheddar”, another called it “very aromatic when dried” and said it “smokes like old school weed”. A Quebec grower who vaporizes it describes a fruity, lemony taste. Think classic 1990s Amsterdam rather than modern dessert.
Appearance: sticky green buds with endless orange hairs
AK-47 produces big, resinous buds — “sticky green bud” with “endless orange hairs”, in the words of one grower; another noted it was “already getting caked in trichomes” a month into flower. Plants are tall with strong branches and produce lots of bud sites, which several growers mention as the reason for their heavy harvests.
AK-47 effects
The effect is uplifting, euphoric and mood-lifting at first, followed by a relaxing feeling in the body. It is a social, creative, any-time-of-day strain that stays functional at moderate doses — one Quebec grower described a buzz that is “energizing and relaxing at the same time”. At 19 to 22% THC it is strong without being overwhelming, which is part of why it has lasted thirty years. Effects vary with the person, the dose and how the plant was grown.
How strong is AK-47? THC content
AK-47 delivers about 19 to 22% THC with low CBD, depending on the growing conditions, the phenotype and the harvest window. One honest Ontario grower estimated his outdoor crop at the lower end of that range, which is normal for an outdoor season. For a strain with a similar build and far more punch, see Bruce Banner.
Growing AK-47: flowering time and yield
AK-47 is rated easy, and the reviews back it up: growers call it “very easy to grow”, “a non-fussy feeder” and a plant that “clones very easily”. Indoors it flowers in 8 to 9 weeks and yields 400 to 600 g/m² under good light; it stretches, so top it and use a net. Outdoors it is typically ready from mid to late October with up to 500 g per plant — a figure Ontario growers beat regularly, with reports of 1.5 lb, 2.5 lb and more from single plants in full sun. Those figures are ranges, not promises. It is a vigorous plant that benefits from topping and LST, and one outdoor grower reported some powdery mildew in a humid season, so give it spacing and airflow. The mid-to-late October finish is the one thing to plan around in Quebec and the Maritimes: start early, choose a sunny spot, and be ready to take it a little early if the weather turns.
Indoor is measured per m², outdoor per plant — the two figures aren’t directly comparable. Real grower results vary widely.
What growers report
We would rather give you the whole picture, so here is what customers wrote on the AK-47 product page (23 reviews, rated 4.8 out of 5 at the time of writing).
- Yields outdoors in Ontario: one experienced grower expected a pound and “ended up producing 2.5 lbs of trimmed and dry buds” from one plant; the same grower reports plants 7 feet tall and 5 feet around, and says that in over twenty years of growing “this is probably one of the best strains we have ever grown”. Another expected “a few pounds for sure off one plant” from a 6-foot-2 plant.
- Ease: “very easy growing plants that sure produce a lot”; “very easy to grow”; “clones very easily”; “no problems with nutes at all”.
- Flavour and resin: “jars absolutely reek of grapefruit with a hint of sharp cheddar”; “very earthy, similar to Blue Diesel, very tasty”; “caked in trichomes a month into flower”; “super sticky buds with a fruity, lemony taste”.
- Consistency over time: a Quebec grower who first grew it twenty years ago bought it again in 2024 and found “everything is the same… 5 out of 5 popped”.
- Germination: most reviewers report 5 of 5 or 15 of 15; one reported about 93% from year-old seeds; two had a few seeds fail in a pack. We replace seeds that do not germinate — contact us with your order number.
- Weather: one outdoor grower noted some powdery mildew in a humid season despite otherwise trouble-free growth.
The takeaway: AK-47 is the strain our most experienced Ontario growers rate at the top for ease, yield and flavour. Give it space and sun and it will outgrow your expectations.
