Sugar Black Rose Strain Review, Effects, Flavour and Growing

Posted On 10/28/2026 By Trent QCS

Sugar Black Rose is an indica-dominant strain from Critical Mass crossed with Black Domina, testing at 20 to 24% THC, with a berry, floral and sweet flavour and a relaxing effect. It flowers in 7 to 8 weeks, finishes outdoors in mid-October, and is unusually easy to grow for the yield it produces. If you want one strain that is forgiving and still heavy, this is the one in our catalogue that fits.

What the genetics tell you

Both parents are workhorses, and this is a cross between two things that were already reliable rather than two things that were fashionable.

  • Critical Mass is the yield side. It is one of the heaviest-producing indica lines in circulation and has been for decades, to the point where its flowers routinely need support.
  • Black Domina is the resin and the weight of the effect. It is a four-way Afghan-heavy indica, short and dense, and it is where the sticky trichome coverage comes from.

Put together you get a plant that produces a lot, is coated in resin, and does not ask much of the grower. The 7-to-8-week bloom is short for an indica of this size, which is the other practical advantage.

Effects and flavour

The effect is relaxing and physical, in line with the genetics on both sides. At 20 to 24% THC it sits just below the very top of the modern range, which some people prefer — it is heavy without being overwhelming. It is an evening strain.

Flavour is where it earns its name: berry and sweet up front with a floral, almost rose-like note behind it. That floral quality is less common than the usual fuel, citrus and dessert profiles, and it is the reason people come back to this one.

Growing Sugar Black Rose

Indoors

Seven to eight weeks of bloom on a high-yielding indica is a good trade. Plan for the weight: Critical Mass genetics produce flowers that outgrow the branches holding them, so net or stake during the stretch rather than after a branch has already bent.

The resin is heavy and the buds are dense, which means humidity is the thing to manage. Keep air moving through the canopy, remove growth that will never see light, and bring humidity down through the final two weeks. Dense indica flowers rot from the inside out, and by the time you can see it you have lost more than you think.

Outdoors

Mid-October is late for a northern season. It will ripen in the warmer southern pockets in a normal year, but you are racing the first hard frost and the autumn rain. The rain is the bigger risk on a strain this dense. If your season is shorter, or your spot is exposed, choose a September finisher from our outdoor seeds grouped by harvest month.

Why it suits a first grow

Three reasons. It tolerates mistakes in feeding better than most high-THC strains. It finishes quickly, which shortens the time in which something can go wrong. And it yields well enough that an imperfect grow still produces a real harvest, which is not true of the finickier modern cultivars.

Frequently asked questions

What is Sugar Black Rose?

An indica-dominant cannabis strain made by crossing Critical Mass with Black Domina. It tests at 20 to 24% THC and is known for a berry and floral sweetness, heavy resin and a relaxing effect.

Is Sugar Black Rose indica or sativa?

Indica dominant, from two Afghan-heavy indica parents. The effect is physical and relaxing.

How strong is Sugar Black Rose?

Twenty to twenty-four per cent THC. High, but a step below the strongest modern strains, which many people find more usable.

What does Sugar Black Rose taste like?

Berry and sweet, with a floral note behind it. The floral quality is unusual and is what the name refers to.

What are the parents of Sugar Black Rose?

Critical Mass and Black Domina. Critical Mass brings the yield; Black Domina brings the resin and the weight of the effect.

How long does Sugar Black Rose take to flower?

Seven to eight weeks indoors, which is short for an indica of this size. Outdoors it finishes in mid-October.

Is Sugar Black Rose easy to grow?

Yes. It is forgiving of feeding mistakes, finishes quickly and yields well. The two things it does need are support for the weight of the flowers and airflow to keep humidity out of the dense buds.

Does Sugar Black Rose have CBD?

It is a THC strain, not a CBD strain. If you want a high-CBD variety, we carry those separately in our CBD cannabis seeds.

Can you grow Sugar Black Rose outdoors in Canada?

In the warmer regions, yes, though a mid-October finish gives little margin against frost and rain. Pick a September finisher for a shorter season. Home cultivation is prohibited in Quebec, though legal in most other provinces.
