What is Blue Dream?
Blue Dream came out of Santa Cruz, California, in the early 2000s, a cross of Blueberry and Haze that became the best-selling strain in the legal US market for most of the 2010s. It owes that success to balance: the Blueberry side gives sweet fruit and a relaxed body, the Haze side gives energy and a clear head, and the result is a sativa that almost nobody finds too intense.
Our Blue Dream feminized seeds are bred by Quebec Cannabis Seeds from that Blueberry × Haze lineage and selected for vigour, mould resistance and an early finish that suits a Canadian season. Strain names are not protected, so Blue Dream from another seed bank is a different cut; everything on this page describes ours. Want it faster and smaller? See Blue Dream Autoflower.
Is Blue Dream indica or sativa?
Blue Dream is sativa-dominant, roughly 60/40, and it shows in the garden: tall, long-branched plants with “tops everywhere”, as one grower put it. Our grower reports from Toronto describe it as tall and sativa-leaning, with branches that bent in rain and wind but a plant that was “very resilient and hardy”. The high is sativa-first — uplifting and clear — but the Blueberry side keeps the body relaxed, which is why it works for people who find Haze strains too edgy. For a purer indica alternative with a similar fruit profile, try Blueberry.
Smell and flavour: sweet blueberry over earth and herbs
The aroma is sweet blueberry first — several growers single out how “very blueberry and fruity” the plants smell in flower — with earthy and herbal Haze notes underneath. The smoke is smooth and sweet with a light berry finish. It is one of the most approachable flavours in our catalogue.
Appearance: long, dense colas on a very big plant
Blue Dream grows long, dense colas with blue-green hues, orange pistils and a good coat of resin. Outdoors the plants get enormous: one grower reported plants 18 feet tall and 6 feet wide with “massive” dense buds, another harvested about 5 lb from a single plant in living soil in Virginia. Indoors it takes well to topping — one grower noted it “seems to take well to topping” at week two of flower.
Blue Dream effects
The effect is euphoric, happy and clear-headed, with a relaxed body — a daytime sativa high without the anxiety some sativas bring. Customers describe it as an “excellent daytime strain”, an “energizing effect that keeps you focused”, and an “excellent buzz”. At 20% THC it is strong enough for experienced users but gentle enough to be a good first strain. Effects vary with the person, the dose and how the plant was grown.
How strong is Blue Dream? THC content
Blue Dream delivers about 20% THC with low CBD, depending on the growing conditions, the phenotype and the harvest window. That is a moderate-to-high level that suits all-day use. If you want more punch with a related flavour, Bruce Banner runs 25 to 32%.
Growing Blue Dream: flowering time and yield
Blue Dream is rated moderate, mostly because of its size. Indoors it flowers in 7 to 9 weeks and yields 500 to 600 g/m² with good light; top early and use a net, because it stretches. One Quebec grower notes it is sensitive to nutrients in veg but hungry in flower, so start light and feed more after the flip. Outdoors it is one of the most rewarding plants we sell: typically ready in late September to early October, very problem resistant, and capable of far more than our conservative 600 g figure — growers report plants of 2 to 5 metres and harvests measured in pounds. Those figures are ranges, not promises. Two reviewers found it sensitive to powdery mildew in a humid season (though resistant to bud rot), so give it sun and airflow, and stake or cage it early: the colas get heavy enough to bend branches.
Indoor is measured per m², outdoor per plant — the two figures aren’t directly comparable. Real grower results vary widely.
What growers report
We would rather give you the whole picture, so here is what customers wrote on the Blue Dream product page (15 reviews, rated 4.5 out of 5 at the time of writing), plus a Toronto grow diary from our grower report analysis.
- Size and yield outdoors: “18 ft tall and 6 ft wide, the buds are massive and dense… there are tops everywhere”; “very hardy outside grow, VERY problem resistant… more than abundant harvest, about 5 lbs” (living soil, Virginia); “big buds that make the plants bend”.
- Toronto, 2020 season: tall and sativa-leaning; branches bent in rain and wind, but the grower described it as very resilient and hardy.
- Feeding: “sensitive to nutrients during veg but takes more during flower” — a useful tip from a Quebec grower who reported a very good yield.
- Effect: “excellent daytime strain”, “energizing effect that keeps you focused”, “excellent buzz”.
- Germination and sex: most reviewers report 5 of 5 germinated. Two reviewers reported one hermaphrodite or male plant in a pack of five to ten; we replace those — contact us with your order number.
- Mildew: one outdoor grower found it sensitive to powdery mildew but resistant to bud rot, with average-sized buds in a humid season.
The takeaway: give Blue Dream sun, space and support, feed lightly in veg, and it will be the biggest plant in your garden.
