What is Sour Diesel?
Sour Diesel — “Sour D” to its fans — appeared on the New York scene in the early 1990s and became the defining East Coast sativa. The accepted story is a cross between Chemdawg 91 and Super Skunk, with the unmistakable fuel smell coming from the Chemdawg side. It was a staple of the legal medical market in California in the 2000s and is still one of the most searched strains in the world.
Our Sour Diesel feminized seeds are our own cut of that lineage, selected for the classic fuel aroma, the energetic sativa high and resilient genetics that stand up to Canadian pests and mould. Strain names are not protected, so a Sour Diesel from another bank is a different plant. Everything on this page describes the seeds sold by Quebec Cannabis Seeds.
Is Sour Diesel indica or sativa?
Sour Diesel is sativa-dominant through and through: tall, with long internodes, thin leaves and a flowering time at the longer end of our range. One grower measured 12 feet outdoors with “huge inner node spacing”; another had plants at 8 feet while still in veg. The high matches — energetic, cerebral and talkative rather than sedating. If you want the fuel flavour with more body and less height, Bruce Banner (Strawberry Diesel in its parentage) is a balanced alternative.
Smell and flavour: diesel fuel, sour citrus and skunk
Nothing else smells quite like it. The aroma is pungent diesel fuel with a sour, lemony edge and a skunky base, strong enough that one grower said his plants “smell like oil, pure hash oil”. It is not a discreet strain — plan on a carbon filter indoors. On the palate it is sharp and sour on the inhale with an earthy, chemical finish. If you like gassy strains, this is the original.
Appearance: airy sativa buds with red and orange pistils
Sour Diesel grows long, somewhat airy colas rather than rock-hard nugs — one grower described “small, beautiful red/maroon buds” and “golf balls with about two leaves each”, which made trimming easy. Colours run from olive and forest green to lime, with orange to maroon pistils and a sticky coat of resin. Plants are tall with thick stems; one grower measured a stem 13 inches around.
Sour Diesel effects
The effect is high-energy: creative, energetic and uplifting, with only light relaxation in the body. It is a daytime strain — good for getting things done, socializing or outdoor activities — and a poor choice right before bed. At 22% THC it is strong, and the fast cerebral onset can feel racy for anxious users, so start small. One grower who has run it for years says it is “by far the most enjoyed by my close friends”. Effects vary with the person, the dose and how the plant was grown.
How strong is Sour Diesel? THC content
Sour Diesel delivers about 22% THC and 1% CBD, depending on the growing conditions, the phenotype and the harvest window. That small amount of CBD takes a little of the edge off compared with pure high-THC sativas. For a stronger daytime option, Super Silver Haze gives a similar energy with a longer flowering time.
Growing Sour Diesel: flowering time and yield
Sour Diesel is rated moderate, mostly because of its size and stretch. Indoors it flowers in 8 to 9 weeks and yields 400 to 500 g/m² with good light and a steady feed. Top it early and flip to 12/12 sooner than you think — it can double or triple in height after the switch, so use a ScrOG net or trellis. Its resilient genetics resist common pests and mould, which several Canadian growers confirm. Outdoors it is typically ready from September to October depending on your latitude, with 400 to 550 g per plant in optimal conditions. Those figures are ranges, not promises. In a cold, wet fall, keep a close eye on the colas in the last two weeks — one Canadian grower warns that mould can become an issue at the end of the season in colder climates.
Indoor is measured per m², outdoor per plant — the two figures aren’t directly comparable. Real grower results vary widely.
What growers report
We would rather give you the whole picture, so here is what customers wrote on the Sour Diesel product page (6 reviews, rated 5 out of 5 at the time of writing).
- Size: “12 feet tall, huge internode spacing” outdoors, with a stem 13 inches around; another grower had two plants at about 8 feet after two months in veg, with fan leaves wider than 12 inches. Plan the space, and stake early.
- Timing: one grower put seedlings in the ground on June 13 and harvested on October 30; another noted that Sour Diesel went into flower earliest of all his plants that year.
- Buds and smell: “small beautiful red/maroon buds, easy trim”, “smells like oil, pure hash oil”, “olive green, forest green and lime green, fluffy, sticky, stanky buds”, “very nice large buds”.
- Germination: four of six reviewers report 100% germination; one had 3 of 5 pop. Several used our recommended germination technique.
- Weather: “keep a close eye on them at the end of the season as mould could be an issue in colder climates” — good advice for any sativa that finishes in October.
The takeaway: Sour Diesel is a big, vigorous, easy-going sativa if you give it room, and the flavour is exactly what the name promises.
